The True Independence Day

Inspired by the Spirit speaking in Sunday’s worship service at Grace Covenant Church DC

31Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed.  32And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free!”

240 years ago, our Founding Fathers signed the Declaration of Independence, so that the colonist could experience freedom from Great Britain. Centuries before that, Jesus granted everyone the ultimate declaration of independence: our freedom from sin!

Blatantly put, people suck. We are the most sinful, dirty creatures undeserving of any blessing.  In spite of all the times we’ve turned from him, cursed him, disobeyed him, God loves us relentlessly. His love surrounds us! Our Heavenly Father loves us so much that he sacrificed his only Son to pay the debt for our sins, so that we could be free to be abide with him  in an incredible, intimate, overwhelmingly loving relationship. That is the best kind of freedom.

So what does this mean for you? Jesus’ sacrifice means your long list of past sins can be erased for free, instantly. Your debt is paid! He will break the chains between you and your old ways. You won’t have to be addicted anymore. You won’t have to think those bad thoughts anymore.  Your slate is wiped clean by the blood of the perfect lamb, Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior. You can have a new start! You will not be condemned for your past. All you have to do is turn towards God, and give Him your life in return!  You have the opportunity today! Dedicate your life to serving and thanking him for your declaration of independence!
